The Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) consortium expresses deep alarm over Kosovo’s new media law, passed by the Parliament this month, which poses significant threats to media freedom and independence. This law grants the government greater control over media regulation through the Independent Media Commission (IMC). Concerns include increased political influence on the IMC, mandatory registration of online media, severe fines for violations, and the removal of a gender equity clause. The law was passed despite criticisms from international organizations like the EU and OSCE. The MFRR calls on Kosovo’s Constitutional Court to assess and potentially repeal the law and urges President Vjosa Osmani to publicly denounce it and uphold media freedom standards. Read more here.
