CIVICUS and Human Rights House Belgrade, including BCSDN member Civic Initiatives, have submitted joint UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR) submission on Serbia in advance of the 29th UPR session in January 2018. In this document, they have examined the Government of Serbia’s compliance with its international human rights obligations to create and maintain a safe and enabling environment for civil society. Specifically, they analyse Serbia’s fulfilment of the rights to freedom of association, assembly, and expression and unwarranted restrictions on human rights defenders (HRDs) since its previous UPR examination in January 2013. To this end, they have assessed Serbia’s implementation of recommendations received during the 2nd UPR cycle relating to these issues and provide a number of specific, action-orientated follow-up recommendations to the State under Review.
