The European Parliament adopted its interim report on the 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), proposing a 10.72 billion EUR allocation for the AgoraEU programme—an increase of 2.14 billion EUR compared to the European Commission’s proposal. The proposal follows a joint open letter, supported by over 500 organisations, including BCSDN, calling for stronger investment in culture and democracy. The Parliament also suggests an overall 197.3 billion EUR increase to the MFF, with major boosts for Horizon Europe and the European Competitiveness Fund. AgoraEU would see a ~25% increase, the highest proportional rise under Heading 2, reflecting growing recognition of culture as a strategic priority. However, stakeholders note that the proposed allocation remains below expectations, including the 12 billion EUR suggested by the CULT Committee, and far from the 2% target for culture. The interim report marks an important step, but further negotiations are expected. Read more here.
