A coalition of civil society, non-profit, and philanthropic organizations has urged the European Commission to reverse its decision to withdraw the Directive on European Cross-Border Associations (ECBA). The Directive, approved by the European Parliament in March 2024, would allow associations operating in multiple EU countries to be recognised across borders under the same conditions as national associations. In a joint letter the organizations stressed that the Directive would remove legal barriers, support cross-border initiatives like joint health services and cultural events, and strengthen the ability of non-profits to contribute to the public good. The letter underlines that the ECBA Directive would strengthen the ability of non-profit organizations to contribute to the public good and level the playing field with other economic enterprises, particularly in cross-border regions, and called on the Commission to keep the Directive in its Work Programme.
