Croatia’s Government has proposed amendments to the Criminal Code and the Act on Protection from Domestic Violence. The changes include new criminal offenses, with a focus on addressing the aggravated murder of women. These amendments represent an effort to combat violence, expanding victims’ rights and introducing stricter measures for restraining orders. The amendments also increase penalties for sexual offenses, abolish the statute of limitations for serious crimes against children, and introduce a new criminal offense – aggravated murder of a female person (femicide). The changes aim to send a clear message that violence against women is unacceptable and align with the Istanbul Convention by introducing the concept of gender-based violence against women.
