The World Bank supports the call for people’s free vaccines and transparency in countries’ decisions regarding COVID-19 vaccinations to reduce information barriers and permit scrutiny and monitoring. However, the importance of respecting governments’ decisions on how to implement their vaccination campaigns in the best way should not be undermined. At the recent civil society event ahead of the World Bank Spring Meetings, civil society members have called the World Bank to use its influence so that governments can be transparent in its deals with vaccine manufacturers; to help them hold national authorities accountable, ensuring those most at risk get priority in COVID-19 vaccination; and to require governments to make the vaccines funded by the World Bank available for free.
