Ahead of the European Council meeting on 15–16 October 2026, the Future of Europe Cohort has issued an open letter urging EU leaders to reject proposed cuts to AgoraEU under the next Multiannual Financial Framework (2028–2034). The signatories, including BCSDN, representing civil society, culture, media and digital rights organisations, express serious concerns over the Irish Presidency’s proposed reductions, which would disproportionately affect AgoraEU while generating savings of just 0.2% of the overall EU budget. They call for the programme’s funding to be maintained at least at the European Commission’s proposed EUR 8.58 billion, with a view to moving towards the European Parliament’s proposed increase. The letter highlights AgoraEU’s role in strengthening democratic resilience, protecting fundamental rights, supporting independent journalism and cultural diversity, and enabling civic participation. At a time of growing disinformation, declining institutional trust and geopolitical uncertainty, the signatories stress the importance of investing in trusted local networks, independent media and civil society. They urge EU Member States to recognise AgoraEU as critical infrastructure for Europe’s future and ensure adequate, long-term funding. Read more here.
