Differing in their range and sphere of influence, the social movements in the Balkans share the idea of building a better, more just society. The fundamental principles of democracy, freedom, justice, and equality are still present within engaged citizens assembled around local initiatives and social movements. The “Bosnian Spring” in BiH, the “Colourful Revolution” in N.Macedonia, the “Justice for David” movement in Bosnia, and the “Ne davimo Beograd” (We won’t Let Belgrade D(r)own”) in Serbia are movements that contributed towards transformative changes in the societies in the Balkans. On the other hand, many recently established local initiatives launched around specific local problems, such as the Rakita resistance in Serbia, the Brave Women of Kruščica movement from Bosnia, the resistance of citizens on Mt Sinjajevina in Montenegro, the citizens’ protest against the demolition of the old National Theatre in Tirana, etc., emphasize the citizens will for democratizing societies.
