The BH Journalists Steering Committee has called on the Una-Sana Canton (USC) Government and Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports to include the media community in drafting the new Law on Information. This law aims to update the 1998 legislation by addressing hate speech, fake news, and harmful online content. Proposed measures include requiring media self-regulation, granting the Ministry authority to fine outlets for failing to remove problematic content, and enabling internet providers to block sites spreading false news. BH Journalists caution that excessive regulation could harm media freedoms and emphasize aligning the USC law with the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). They highlight the need for the law to harmonize with BiH’s state-level pre-accession efforts for EU Chapter 10. The Committee insists on a transparent, inclusive drafting process that incorporates media representatives to ensure balanced outcomes. Read more here.
