The Balkan Civil Society Development Network (BCSDN) has expressed deep concern over violence during nationwide protests in Serbia on August 13, 2025. Demonstrations in over 30 cities, including Belgrade and Novi Sad, were met with excessive force, with reports of physical assaults, chemical agents, and the deployment of the military unit “Kobre.” Over 60 people, including civilians and journalists, were injured. BCSDN highlighted police support for pro-government groups and the obstruction of media, calling it a serious violation of rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. Civic Initiatives is providing legal aid to those detained or assaulted. The European Commission condemned the violence, stressing that Serbia’s EU path depends on upholding civil liberties. BCSDN called for immediate protection of citizens and journalists, impartial investigations, and accountability for all abuses. Read more here.
