After 15 years on Twitter/X, BCSDN has decided to step away from the platform. Since joining in 2009, we have used Twitter/X to share insights, engage with partners, and advocate for a stronger civic space across the Balkans and Europe. With a substantial number of followers and years of active engagement, this decision was not taken lightly.
For us, as a Civil Society actively contributing towards social change, Twitter/X used to be associated with our mission: building communities, enabling communications and information flow during restrictive regimes, and driving social change.
However, recent changes on the platform have led to an increase in unregulated hate speech, disinformation, and harmful narratives that undermine democratic dialogue. Twitter/X no longer provides a space for constructive engagement and, under its current direction, is not aligned with the values of civic space, freedom of expression, and accountability that we stand for. By stepping away, we join many civil society organizations (CSOs) across Europe and worldwide in moving away from a platform that no longer serves as an effective tool for our work.
Where to Find Us Now?
Our commitment to protecting and expanding civic space remains unchanged. We will continue to share news, insights, and analysis on the state of civil society, the CS enabling environment, and key developments affecting civic freedoms. You can stay connected with us on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, where we will keep amplifying voices, advocating for policy change, and fostering dialogue. Additionally, we are now on Bluesky, which, although still new, is a growing platform that supports meaningful discussions and engagement on democracy, human rights, and civil society resilience.
We invite you to stay connected with us through these channels as we continue our work toward a more open and democratic civic space in the Balkans and beyond!
