In a joint statement, BCSDN expresses strong support for Serbian civil society, calling for an end to government repression and standing with them in their fight to protect democratic values and fundamental rights. Recent protests, fueled by corruption, environmental issues, and claims of rigged elections, with those surrounding Rio Tinto’s mining plans being the most intense, have been met with government-led smear campaigns, intimidation, and detentions. The EU’s lithium mining deal with Serbia has added to these tensions, with critics claiming it prioritizes corporate interests over democracy. In just 10 days, 33 activists were detained, and 11 international donors and 39 organizations, including BCSDN, were targeted by a coordinated media smear campaign. Despite ongoing repression, the EU has yet to condemn the actions against Serbian civil society. As a regional network promoting a more enabling environment for civil society, BCSDN remains dedicated to monitoring the situation and responding as necessary as it continues to develop.
